Stalis Things to Do
Beach
Stalis (sometimes called Stalida) has a great range of sandy beaches which are divided by rocks. All the family can have a great time playing beach games, paddling or swimming in the cool sea, or simply lying back on beach beds and topping up those holiday tans as the temperature soars. There are also plenty of watersports on offer!

Nightlife
If you’ve packed your dancing shoes and fancy a great night out, but the non-stop action of nearby youth holiday resort Malia is just not what you’re into, then Stalis has some good discos where you can let yourself go and dance the night away until late. (Note: A mini-train from Stalis to Malia is available for those who would like to explore the resort in the daytime).

Eating and Drinking
For a relaxing drink (or two!) and a friendly chat with other holidaymakers or local people, Stalis has plenty of bars. You could also grab a bite to eat at one of the numerous beachside tavernas.

Excursions
Checking out other local resorts from Stalis is so easy thanks to the excellent public transport connections available from there. At Hersonissos (only 3 miles away), as well as places to shop, there are numerous beaches and small coves, and you could also visit Lychnostatis – the wonderful Open-Air Museum of Crete. Local buses also go east to Aghios Nikolaos, Elounda and west to Heraklion.

Boat Trips
From Stalis you could take a boat trip to Santorini Island long considered one of the most beautiful islands in all of Crete. Once there, you could top up your tan at the Perissa, Kamari or Red Beach. Or, if you’re feeling a little adventurous, why not explore the impressive cliff-top villages? Setting sail for Spinalonga Island could also be part of your holiday itinerary. In 1579 the Venetians built a magnificent fortress there over the ruins of an acropolis.

Explore
As well as exploring local traditional Crete villages (on foot or by bicycle), a trip to the rugged and rocky Dikti Mountains is not to be missed. As well as taking in the breathtaking scenery as you hike, you could go rock climbing or even saddle up and trot on horseback along rugged mountain paths which are bordered by lovely wildflowers.
Stalis Weather
Weather in Stalis – Mediterranean climate, a great range of beaches
Lying between Malia and Hersonissos, Stalis is located on the north coast of Crete, just 18 miles from Heraklion airport. The popular, developed resort experiences a typically Mediterranean climate, with long hot summers and mild, wetter winters. The maximum summer temperature in Stalis is 27C – great for picking up a tan on any of the numerous sandy beaches. Rain in Stalis during the summer is virtually non-existent, which means guaranteed, uninterrupted sunshine for the entire length of your holiday break. The average winter temperature is 15C, with rain falling for up to 12 days per month through the winter season.

Stalis Weather – Long hot summers, azure blue waters lapping the shore…

The average temperature in July and August is 27C which makes cooling off with a leisurely swim in the bluest of blue seas an absolute delight. If it’s a summer holiday in Stalis you’re looking for, but you would prefer slightly cooler temperatures, then you might be wise to wait until September to pack your suitcases and fly out as the temperature then remains constant at an agreeable 25C max.

Weather in Stalis – Milder weather in spring, winter rainfall expected
If exploring local traditional Crete villages is what you’re into, or a trip to the rugged and rocky Dikti Mountains sounds great, then it would be best to visit Stalis in the spring where walking, hiking, cycling and even rock climbing can all be comfortably enjoyed as the temperature remains a constant 15C throughout March, rising to 18C in April. In the winter months (November to February), expect an average of 10 days of rain per month throughout the season.
Sissi Weather

Summer temperatures can reach as high as 26C in August – perfect for those afternoons spent topping up your tan on the gorgeous soft sandy beaches. You can expect very little rainfall throughout June, July and August. The maximum winter temperature in Sissi is 14C (in December) – ideal weather for exploring the wonderful Lassithi Plateau or the many charming Crete villages nearby without feeling all hot and bothered! Rainfall is relatively high throughout the winter season.

Sissi Weather – Long holiday season, plenty of sunshine
The long holiday season in Sissi stretches from April to October, with July and August being the hottest summer months as temperatures soar to 26C. Throughout June, July and August you can expect 12 hours of sunshine. The clear blue waters are perfect for a gentle paddle or a swim, and the cool winds blowing in from Sissi’s undulating rocky outcrop also help take the edge off the scorching heat. In the cooler months (May and September) you can still pick up a tan as the average temperature is 23C.

Weather in Sissi – Short winters, but with increased rainfall
The average temperature in Sissi during the spring months of March and April is 16C – great weather for walking and exploring, and also for taking excursions to the ancient Minoan Palaces at Knossos or the archaeology museum at Heraklion. As mentioned, snow during Sissi’s winter season (November to February) is not unknown, but more likely is rain and temperatures at an average of 14C.
Sissi Things to Do
Village Life
For those who wish to truly escape from it all and seek a peaceful, slow-paced holiday break in a picturesque location, Sissi is undoubtedly the place to head for. A charming little fishing village built around an attractive harbour, Sissi is about as laid-back as it gets!

Beach
Sissi has a pleasant bay with a couple of beaches attractively set on the rocky coastline. And if you fancy a gentle paddle in the sea, or even a leisurely swim, Sissi has two stretches of soft sandy beach which are safe for swimming and equipped with modest facilities. Again, in true Sissi tradition, there is no water sports-mad high-octane beach vibe going on here, but simply the option of a stroll down to the port or the seashore for a quiet few hours spent topping up your tan, or a cool drink in the shade and a good read.

Eating & Drinking
Sissi has a few quiet cafes where you can enjoy a tasty light meal and wile away the afternoon chatting to other holidaymakers or local villagers. As evening falls, enjoy a pleasant dinner in one of the tavernas or fish restaurants, and then take a lovely evening stroll around the bay before retiring home to bed for a restful night’s sleep.

Excursions
Sissi is ideally located for trips to the longer beach at Malia (the youth party resort where, if it’s a bit of nightlife you’re after, there are countless clubs where music throbs into the small hours!). And for daytime trips, as well as regular buses to neighbouring towns and cities, such as Heraklion and Hersonissos, why not catch the boat to the unoccupied island of Spinalonga, known for its small pebble beaches and also for being the setting for Victoria Hislop’s bestselling novel ‘The Island’.

Ancient & Historical Sites
For history-lovers, the ancient Minoan Palaces at Knossos and Malia offer an entrancing journey back in time, as does the archaeology museum at Heraklion.

Explore
No holiday in Sissi would be complete without setting aside an afternoon to explore the wonderful Lassithi Plateau. As well as being the birthplace of Zeus, there are several charming Crete villages where a warm welcome is always waiting. What’s more, the landscape, wildlife and numerous beautifully painted windmills make the Lassithi Plateau a photographer’s dream.
Rethymnon Weather
Weather in Rethymnon Mediterranean climate on Crete’s north coast
Located in the middle of the north coast of Crete, and 40 miles south-east of Chania and Chania airport, Rethymnon experiences a typically Mediterranean climate, with long hot summers and fairly mild winters. Through July and August the temperature can reach 30C and you can expect 12 hours’ sunshine per day before temperatures drop slightly to an average of 27C through September. For those who might be worried the scorching weather may prove a little too much in what is always a busy and bustling resort, the heat is made bearable by welcome northern winds which gently blow in off the Mediterranean Sea.

Weather in Rethymnon – Pleasant autumn days, mild wetter winters
The autumn season in Rethymnon can still be pleasant, as temperatures level out at around an average of 21C through October and November, but rain can become a daily occurrence as the season passes into winter. With winter in Rethymnon stretching from December to the end of February, expect rain as the weather becomes rather unpredictable during this season. Although a run of cloudy days can be suddenly followed by sunnier ones, temperatures can drop to 16C in December, and to 15C in January and February. With the average high temperature rising from 17C in March, to 20C in April, and to an agreeable 24C in May, the milder spring weather then makes Rethymnon ideal for the more adventurous tourist who wishes to explore charming small hillside villages, lush valleys, olive groves and forests, and even close-by mountains!
Rethymnon Things to Do
Beach
If you are looking for one of the best beaches in Crete, then you will find the pale quality sand and shingle beaches at Rethymnon hard to beat. As well as being extraordinarily long (an incredible 12-mile stretch!); the beaches have mostly calm water, making them safe for bathing. There is a range of exciting water sports, from waterskiing to diving, are also available.

Town
As the 3rd largest town in Crete (and a university town, to boot!), Rethymnon offers an enthralling mix of old and modern. As well as being fascinated by the Turkish influences, you’ll love the gorgeous Venetian architecture, particularly at the harbour. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the open markets, and don’t miss the opportunity to browse in the modern chic shops or to choose from local crafts.

Romantic Old Town
After a tasty meal at a charming local café, enjoy a pleasant evening walk along the promenade and take in the elegance and the atmosphere of what has to be one of Crete’s most beautiful and historically important towns, replete with stunning fountains and archways, colourful balconies, winding narrow streets and more.

Exploring and Hiking
For the adventurous, Rethymnon is a fantastic base from which to explore lush valleys, olive groves and forests. If you have packed your hiking boots, you could set aside an afternoon to explore the local rocky mountains.

Eating and Drinking
When it comes to fine food and drink, you’ll be spoilt for choice on a holiday to Rethymnon. The town offers a wonderful selection of cafes and tavernas. And if it’s a quiet dinner-for-two on the waterfront you’re thinking of, Rethymnon has plenty of romantic beachside restaurants.

Ancient & Historical Sites
For those who wish to ‘go back in time’, enjoy visiting Rethymnon’s 16th century fortress (probably the largest ever built by the Venetians). You could also visit the archaeological museum, churches, monasteries, as well as ancient sites and remains.

Excursions
From Rethymnon you could enjoy trips to nearby islands, caves, charming small hillside villages, and also the famous Samaria Gorge – one of the longest and most awe-inspiring gorges in Europe. And if after all that you’re still feeling adventurous, from Rethymnon you could easily get to the wonderful Amari Valley or the equally impressive Koutaliotiko Ravine where the historic Preveli Monastery is located.
